Brief
As one half of the Electro-R&B duo Tropic, I extend beyond the roles of singer and songwriter. Creating the visual aspects of my music is a vital part of my creative process, fuelled by my belief that music and visuals are inextricably intertwined. I make a point to document the visuals, images, and colors that inspire me during each release cycle to ensure each song comes together both sonically and visually as a cohesive album experience.
Our upcoming EP, "Boyfriend," is a celebration of the queer experience and serves as my personal musical coming-out journey. It was essential for me that our visuals reflect this. Throughout the creation of this EP, I found myself drawn to the duality of the desert. The desert embodies both harshness and serenity, barrenness and beauty, scorching heat and icy desolation. Its vast, empty expanses mirrored the isolation and confusion of concealing my true self, under the relentless heat of societal judgment faced by many in the queer community. Yet, the desert is not only a symbol of desolation; amidst the arid heat lies the oasis of acceptance, a symbol of resilience, transformation, and captivating beauty.
With this desert imagery in mind, I chose it as the perfect backdrop for the EP. Each single represents a different time of day, aligning each song's core emotion with a corresponding landscape and color story. It begins with the sultry midnight backdrop of our lead single, "Boy," and culminates in the EP's cover, featuring a harsh midday sun. This sun symbolizes the defiant and, at times, overwhelming freedom of being out in the open, exposed, and ready for the world to see me clearly for the first time.
